What the War Costs Oakland

"Four years ago I knew more young Oaklanders would die on the streets of Oakland than in Iraq
because the cost of war.  Each year we have had federal cuts in Headstart, education,
childcare, police, health care, and environmental protection.  The cost of the war
will be paid for over the next several decades even if we stopped today..."

Oakland’s Share of the Iraq War
reached $ 511,490,000 at Noon on March 7, 2007.

 

Over the Last 4 Years That Could Have:

  • Built 4600 units of housing

  • Insured about 75,000 children each year

  • Hired enough teachers to cut class sizes in every classroom in half.

  • Provided 24,000 4-year scholarships = approximately every high school senior

  • Provided 16,000 children a year Head Start =every low income child in the city
