For her 60-plus years of community activism,
focus on our green space and support for her
neighbors and their concerns, Marj Saunders has
been rewarded with a park that bears her name
and the gratitude of the hills community.
As many officials and community leaders said at
last Saturday's dedication ceremony, Saunders
has served as a model of how residents can
contribute to the positive long-term development
and natural beauty of their neighborhoods.
"When Marj commits to doing something, she sets
a path for the rest of us," said City Council
President Ignacio De La Fuente.
We thank the Piedmont Pines Neighborhood
Association, City of Oakland, Life Enrichment
Agency, Office of Parks and Recreation and the
following individuals for their support of
Saunders and the Marj Saunders Park:
• Henry
Chang, City Councilman at large;
• Jean
Quan, City Councilwoman for District 4
(Montclair-Laurel);
• Jim
Ryugo of the Parks and Recreation
Department; and
• Dick
Spees, president of the Piedmont Pines
Neighborhood Association and a former city
councilman.
