DISTRICT 4 City Councilwoman
Jean Quan and the Department of
Parks and Recreation will host a
workshop Saturday morning at the
Joaquin Miller Community Center.
The workshop, the first of
two, aims to outline the future
of the hills park and Castle
Canyon.
More than 130 park users
responded to a survey about park
use and improvements. The survey
results will be presented at the
meeting and include the
following topics: public safety
and security; pedestrian and
vehicular access; maintenance;
environmental restoration and
habitat preservation; wildfire
prevention and vegetation
management; activities involving
bike riders, hikers, horses,
dogs, young children and
seniors, as well as conflicts
arising between these various
groups; signs and markings; and
inter-jurisdictional
coordination with the
neighboring East Bay Regional
Parks District.
We strongly urge residents to
attend the two workshops.
Joaquin Miller Park plays a
vital role in our community.
It's home to Woodminster
Amphitheater, where a series of
musicals is staged each summer;
it includes 11 picnic sites, a
new playground that's accessible
to kids with disabilities, and a
redwood grove that was donated
in 1928.
The park also features a
network of trails for hiking,
biking and horseback riding.
Access to the trails by
different groups has been
controversial in recent years.
And while that debate will
certainly continue, we encourage
residents and park supporters to
attend Saturday's forum with an
open mind.
