Nominations are in and five District 4
residents will be given $1,000 to use on
neighborhood enhancements at a ceremony
on Saturday.
The event is Councilwoman Jean Quan's
annual local heroes celebration, aimed
at rewarding people who do acts that
benefit the community.
"We started this last year when we
realized there's so many amazing people
out there who do little things that
don't get recognized," Quan said.
This year saw 25 nominations, some for
individuals, others for couples and
groups. They were submitted both by
Quan's staff and fellow residents. The
public is welcome to attend the
ceremony, which will also celebrate
Chinese New Year with a lion dancer and
Chinese pastries to snack on.
But the best part of the event is
meeting neighbors, Quan said.
"A lot of times, people don't realize
things outside their own block, much
less around the city. A lot of people
(at the event) never met before, and
some nice ties can come out of the
process."
Nominees all have a chance to win
tickets to an Oakland A's game. The
$1,000 that five will win can be used
for capital improvements to the public
project of their choice.
