A farmers market
like the one held
every Friday in Old
Oakland might soon
be coming to
Montclair Village,
and business owners
want to know what
the community thinks
of the idea.
The Montclair
Village Association
is dedicating the
majority of
tonight's meeting to
hearing comments and
questions about the
market.
"Basically we want
to hear from anyone
who may be against
the market," said
Helen Wyman,
director of
the Montclair
Village Association.
"The community has
expressed their
support, and we
really want to have
full support from
the merchants."
The market, produced
by Urban Village
Farmers' Market
Association, would
likely be held every
Sunday on La Salle
Avenue. The street
would be closed to
the public as fresh
produce farmers,
food vendors and
artisans peddle
their wares through
the morning and into
the afternoon.
Wheels of Justice
owner Justice
Baxter, vice
president of the
Montclair Village
Association board,
said the new farmers
market would be an
opportunity to build
a stronger community
in the village.
"It is not only just
about coming
together to buy
fruits and
vegetables, it is a
community meeting
ground," he said.
"You'll always run
into a friend or
someone you know at
the local farmers
market."
The idea to bring a
market to Montclair
began
two years ago when a
merchant suggested
the idea to the
Village Association.
A few merchants
protested, Baxter
said, worried the
market would snarl
traffic in the area
and take away
precious few parking
spots in the
village.
Most of those
concerns have now
been set aside as
business owners
realize the market
would bring more
shoppers to
Montclair during
what are usually
considered slow
Sundays, Wyman said.
"People tend to get
their coffee and
leave," she said.
"Bringing in the
farmers market will
bring more foot
traffic to the
village and get
people to shop at
stores."
City Councilmember
Jean Quan
(Montclair-Laurel),
who has also been
working to bring a
farmers market to
the Dimond district,
said she supports a
market in Montclair.
"I think it's great
that Oakland is one
of those places
where you can have
multiple farmers
markets in multiple
neighborhoods," she
said.
